Khalilzad to Resign?

This is sort of bizarre. According to the Associated Press US-UN Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad, speaking in the Dari language, told Afghanistan's Ariana Television network that he was planning on resigning. When the AP translated these remarks and out them to Khalilzad's spokesman, the spokesman said that the Ambassador "has no immediate plans to resign." Which is it?

Comments

Maybe he "misspoke". Maybe the translator got it wrong. Maybe he didn't think anyone would notice if he made the announcement in Dari. Maybe he said it in a tone that is sarcastic to Dari speakers, but wasn't picked up by the translators. Maybe he just forgot to inform his spokesman.

We'll just have to wait and see...

Halfway to the Millennium Development Goals
Email | Digg! Digg | Del.icio.us

The following appeared as an op-ed in The Guardian Online on Thursday, September 25th.

This week, over 150 world leaders are gathered at the UN for the opening of the general assembly. If recent years are any indication, news outlets will focus on the disagreements aired on Tuesday, when George Bush and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad took the podium.

But the real drama occurs today (Thursday), when the same global leaders that butted heads earlier in the week take stock of one of the most far-reaching and noble statements of international cooperation ever agreed upon, the millennium development goals.
