Taking On Maternal Death, One Cause at a Time

UNFPA officials are calling on governments to address the high rates of maternal death, and to find the root causes behind them. Deputy Representative of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) for the English and Dutch-speaking Caribbean, Jaime Nadal-Roig, said in a recent interview:

"This should be from the perspective of reproductive health, which is more holistic. we have to look at root causes of the problem and the broader picture."

Tackling the specific causes of maternal complications, such as fistula incontinence, hypertensive disease and obstructed labor, can help reduce numbers. RH Reality Check has a piece up addressing the fact that nearly 13% maternal deaths that are caused by unsafe abortions. Here's a snippet:

Reducing maternal deaths is a laudable goal, and one that must be achieved if the rest of the millennium development goals are to be realized. But reductions in maternal mortality can never be fully realized unless the global community of donors, governments, and public health starts including abortion in realistic approaches to protecting women's health. If the world wants to promote development, it needs to start promoting comprehensive reproductive health care.

Dearest Members,
maternal mortality is one of the MDGs that all countries need to meet target to martenal mortality by half. The challenges remains most of the countries where there is extreme povert both child and maternal mortality is high.
The emphasis here is that the global leaders in reproductive health have to increase access to health care services, all governement and NGO and UN have to develop stronger partnership its not individual struggle.
There is need to strenfgten the capacity of health services delivery in ,most countries,in africa forexample the health structures are very poor due to lack of resoucre, referral system do not exist, the facilities are not well equiped and supply of medicine is still another obstacle to reproductive health.

Beside that there is need to strenghten the capacity of the health professsionals, through visitation ,seminars, conferencesa, ton job training and general commitment of government to ivest in human resource development. In post conflict areas like sudan there high high maternal and child mortality due to illness that could be treated.Malaria still poses threat and many expectant mother miscourage.

There is need to uprecend the capacity of research and development in the key factor affecting the reproductive heath. There is need to increase the grants and financial budget for health delivery if we are to meet the MDGs target by 2015,..
Thanks you,

Confronting the Iraq Refugee Crisis
Email | Digg! Digg | Del.icio.us

By Ken Bacon, President, Refugees International

Today nearly five million Iraqis--20% of the population--are displaced. About half of them have fled the country and live as refugees throughout the Middle East, while the rest are displaced within Iraq. Most fled their homes because they felt unsafe; those who worked for the U.S. as translators or drivers fled after they were attacked as collaborators. Most refugees and internally displaced lack access to employment, education and medical care; they are facing shortages of food and money.

This is a humanitarian crisis first, but it is also becoming a security problem.
