Haiti Earthquake. Rescue Efforts Continue; Death Toll Rises; New Images from Relief Effort

Ban Ki Moon visited the rubble of the UN Headquarters in Haiti yesterday..  Here is a video of Ban’s remarks.

UN News Center has more.

The BBC reports that U.S. General Ken Keen, who is leading the American military efforts in Haiti, calls the quake “a disaster of epic proportions” and says that 150,000 to 200,000 dead is “a start point.”

Meanwhile, relief efforts continue in earnest.  I just came off a conference call with Dr. Dan Carucci of the UN Foundation who returned last night from Haiti. (You can listen to audio of the call, here.)  He visited a”humanitarian calling center” which makes satellite phones available so people affected by the earthquake can make contact with their loved ones anywhere in the world.  The center is managed by Telecoms Sans Frontieres, which is a group suppored by the UN Foundation-Vodafone Foundation partnershipThe UN Foundation sends us along these photos. (As regular readers are aware, the UN Foundation helps sponsor this site.)
