The SG; Lakhdar Brahimi; UNHCR

The SG: The SG leaves today for Sweden where he will attend the Global Forum for Migration and Development. He will return to NY on Thursday.

Lakhdar Brahimi: The SG announced at today’s noon briefing that he would accept Lakhdar Brahimi’s resignation as Joint Special Representative of the SG and League of Arab States to Syria. The SG thanked Brahimi for his efforts in organizing the Geneva Conference on Syria and his work with the intra-Syria talks earlier in the year.

UNHCR: The UN Refugee Agency is asking governments to find alternatives to dangerous sea crossings. UNRA’s remarks come in response to a recent shipwreck off the Italian island of Lampedusa in the Mediterranean.

Nigeria: The SG’s high-level representative to Nigeria, Said Djinnit, continues to meet with UN officials and members of the Nigerian government to discuss UN support in the safe return of the abducted schoolgirls. The SG said that Boko Haram’s threats speak to larger efforts that must be made by the global community to strengthen efforts against terrorism, piracy, human trafficking and illicit drug trade.
