Côte d’Ivoire: over the weekend the SG issued another statement on the situation in Côte d’Ivoire, which expressed his deep concern and reiterated his statement made on Friday that “any attack on UN forces will be an attack on the international community and those responsible for those actions will be held accountable”. He further emphasized that UNOCI will continue fulfilling its mandate and monitoring any human rights violations, incitement to violence/hatred and attacks on peacekeepers. Speaking today in Abidjan, the SRSG said the UN will continue its fundamental tasks of certifying the election results and maintaining peace – including the protection of civilians and the Golf Hotel. So far, approximately 50 are estimated dead, 200 injured and 470 arbitrarily arrested and detained. The High Commissioner for Human Rights has also issued a statement expressing her concern about the “growing evidence of massive violations of human rights”. Today the Security Council renewed the mandate of UNOCI until June 30, 2011 and adopted a second resolution calling on Ivoirians to respect the outcome of the elections.
DPRK: the Council continued to hold consultations on the situation in the Korean Peninsula today, after 8 hour negotiations failed to produce a statement yesterday.
Second Committee: today the GA considered the draft texts from the Second Committee. Key resolutions will proclaim 2012 as the International Year for Sustainable Energy for All and will set June 8-10, 2011 as the date for the GA High-Level Review of HIV/AIDS. Third Committee texts will be considered tomorrow.
UNFCCC: in a press release issued by UNFCCC today, Christiana Figueres called on nations to follow-up to COP16 with higher emissions cuts and the launch of new institutions and funds, adding “It needs to be implemented as fast as possible, and it needs to be accompanied by credible accountability systems that will help in measuring progress”. Her statement also cited the central role of civil society and business, which she said is “critical” for the Cancun Agreement’s implementation. She is hoping for quick decisions on appointing the board of the new Green Fund and the Committee of the Technology Mechanism, specifically.
