Map of the Day: What Countries Have Ratified The Paris Climate Agreement?

Today’s map comes from the World Resources Institute, which runs the ever helpful “Paris Agreement Tracker” that shows which countries, to data, have signed and ratified the Paris Climate Agreement which was adopted last year.

The Paris Agreement is the world’s last best hope to solve the global climate crisis. The fact that nearly every country on earth cohered around this common plan last December could be a key turning point to slow the ever warming planet. So far, 180 countries have signed the accord, but relatively few have formally ratified it. And for the Paris agreement to go into effect, 55 countries representing at least 55% of global emissions must ratify.

During the ASEAN summit earlier this month, the USA and China — the top two global emitters — jointly ratified the treaty, giving it a huge boost. Next week on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York there will be a formal ceremony in which several countries are expected to formally deposit their instruments of ratification. Among them is Brazil, which last week pledged to ratify the agreement.

Still, don’t expect the threshold for entry into force happen during the September 21 ceremony, says David Waskow of the World Resources Institute on a conference call with reporters yesterday. But there is a high likelihood that the requisite number of ratifications will occur sometime before the end of the year.
