Syria: The High Commissioner for Human rights reminded the Syrian government of their responsibilityto protect prisoners ad detainees afterUNHCR received information that Syrian armed forces entered Aleppo Central Prison, endangering those inside the compound.

Turkey: OCHA Operations Director John Ging will meet with Turkish and humanitarian authorizes on a three day mission in the southern region.

Ukraine: The SG urged all parties to create a peaceful and fair environment for all eligible voters in the upcoming Ukrainian presidential election.

Thailand: Following the military takeover and declaration of martial law, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay called for a return to rule of law and respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms.

Balkans:  The DSG spoke by phone with the Prime Minister of the Republic of Serbia, the Chairman of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina and President of the Republic of Croatia on behalf of the SG. In their conversations, the DSG shared the UN’s support and readiness to offer the region with further assistance.

UN Women: Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, head of UN Women, leaves for Bangui May 24 to draw attention to the status of women and girls in CAR. The trip is a joint mission with the African Union, the UN and the Economic Community of Central African States.
