General Assembly Chastises Syria Crackdown

The final vote count was 122 in favor, 13 against, 41 abstentions. China and Russia abstained, along with India and South Africa. If China and Russia parlay those abstentions in the Security Council, a Syria sanctions resolution may finally see the light of day.

Heads of State UN General Assembly Speeches Kick Off Tomorrow

As per tradition Brazil will kick off the events tomorrow with a speech from President Dilma Rousseff. Then, President Obama (in his role as the head of state of the host country) will take to the podium.  Other notable speakers tomorrow include French President Nicolas Sarkozy and Afghan President Hamid Karzai.

Pedantic Name Dispute Makes its Way to the General Assembly

One of the most inane international disputes today is over the name of a country that is referred to in official documentation as "The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, (FYROM)."  Understandably, the government of this country prefers to simply be called, "The Republic of Macedonia." (Who wants to be associated with Yugoslavia, anyway?)
