South Sudan Foes to Meet Today….For the first time since fighting erupted in December Riek Machar and Salva Kiir will meet directly. The two former political allies turned violent foes are meeting under the auspices of Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) in Adis Ababa for a round of peace talks.  It’s been a Horrible Year. Tens of thousands of people have been killed, about 1 million people are displaced, and the country faces the threat of a famine since planting season was interrupted by the conflict. Can this succeed? The sides have already pledged a month long ceasefire. Mediators are expected to present plans to implement that ceasefire, and also present initial proposals for a longer term political solution to this crisis.
