Deadly Floods in Eastern India

A least 48 people died as the result of flooding in eastern India. “Torrential rains have claimed as many as 48 lives in eastern India, which this month saw the worst cyclone to hit the country in over a decade, the Press Trust of India reported Saturday. The downpour has seen rivers spill their banks in India’s eastern coastal states of Orissa and Andhra Pradesh, forcing thousands to flee their homes and seek refuge in shelters, two weeks after India’s most severe cyclone in 14 years lashed the coastline.” (AFP http://bit.ly/1aN5JeH)

Saudi Women Protest by Driving

A few dozen women in Saudi Arabia protested the country’s rule against female drivers by stepping behind the drivers wheel, on Saturday. “‘We are looking for a normal way of life,’ Madiha al-Ajroush, 60, a psychologist, said in an interview in Riyadh, the Saudi capital, ‘for me to get into my car and do something as small as get myself a cappuccino or something as grand as taking my child to the emergency room.’” (NYT http://nyti.ms/1axM0TR)
