UN Convoy in Lebanon is Attacked

Wires are reporting that a UN convoy in Southern Lebanon was hit in a roadside bomb attack.  At least three people were wounded. In 2007, six Spanish peacekeepers were killed in a similar attack.

There are about 11,000 peacekeepers in the United Nations Interim force in Lebanon, known as UNIFIL.  This mission is somewhat different from other UN peacekeeping missions in that it has a substantial European contingent (which was a condition that Israeli’s placed on accepting the force back in 2006.)  There is no word yet on the nationality of the peacekeepers that were wounded. But when we receive more details on the attack, we will update.

In the meantime, this attack comes just a few days before International Peacekeeper Day, which just underscores the dangers that peacekeepers face everyday–and why they deserve our support.
