UNAMID Mandate Extended, Cluster Bomb Treaty to Enter into Force, Asia MDGS Review Meeting, and more from the UN

Convention on Cluster Munitions: on Sunday, August 1 the Convention on Cluster Munitions will enter into force, a development welcomed by the SG.  The First Meeting of States Parties will be held in Lao People’s Democratic Republic, a country which has suffered from cluster munitions, in November 2010.

UNAMID: today the Security Council unanimously extended the mandate of UNAMID by 12 months, until July 31, 2011.  On Sunday, Russia assumes the rotating presidency of the Council from Nigeria.

Global Field Support Strategy: today, USG DFS Susanna Malcorra briefed the press on DPKO/DFS’s new Global Field Support Strategy, which aims to streamline the UN’s support to peacekeeping missions through greater efficiencies and economies of scale – more to come on this.

Bonn Climate talks: the August Bonn Climate Change Talks will be held August 2-6.

MDGs in Asia & Pacific: next week USG for Economic and Social Affairs Zukang travels to Jakarta to participate in the Special Ministerial Meeting on the MDGs Review in the Asia and Pacific (Aug 3-4)
